NewViews can be run as a workstation or as a server. Information on running NewViews as a server for a multi-user installation can be found in the section The NewViews Server.
You run NewViews as a workstation to access one or more sets of books (also referred to as databases).
Any number of sets of books can be open simultaneously, even with a single user installation. In a multi-user installation, any combination of local and remote sets of books can be open at the same time.
When you run the NewViews workstation, a login table is displayed as shown below. Each row identifies a set of books (database) you can open and work on. The first time you run the NewViews workstation, this table will be empty.
To open a set of books for the first time, you insert a row, fill in File and User, then change the State from closed to open.
The next time you want to open the same set of books it will already be listed in the workstation table, so all you have to do is change the State to open. You can also choose to have books open automatically whenever you run the workstation by setting the Autoopen field to automatic. See Opening Books Automatically for details.
When you add a set of books to the workstation table, the user is automatically set to ADMINISTRATOR. This can be changed once you have more than one user set up for a set of books.
If a user has a password for a set of books, which should always be the case for security reasons, the password must be entered before the books can be accessed. However, the workstation remembers passwords so the password is only collected the first time the books are opened by a specific user, or if the user's password has been changed since the last time the books were opened. Since the workstation remembers passwords, the workstation itself should be protected by a password. See Workstation Passwords for more on passwords.
