Autotmatic Version Change Backups

NewViews automatically creates a backup before any database is converted to a new version. A version change means that the major/minor numbers changed, such as 2.33 changing to 2.34. In this case a backup with the file name acme.backup_of_version_2.33 is created in the same folder as acme.nv2. This ensures that a backup is created for each version and also provides a fall-back position should problems arise when a database is converted.

You may want to move version change backups file off-line to save space on the disk containing your active databases. Note that when databases are in the cloud, version backups will be created but cloud computer access is needed to move them from the cloud. Currently, there is no way to download backups from the cloud.

Note that updating release 2.33.2.20190124 to 2.33.3.20190516 does not represent a version change because both releases are version 2.33. The service pack number and release date changed but as version did not change, a version change backup is not created in this case.

The -backup_logout_days command line option.

Automatic logout backups can be controlled or disabled using a command line option. To control the number of days, thus overriding the default of 7 days, specify a -backup_logout_days X option on the command line. If you specify 0 days, the logout backup is completely disabled.

The -backup_logout_days option can be set when you run either a workstation or a server. When you run a server, the command line option will apply to the server database and any application databases managed by the server. When you run a workstation, the command line option will apply to the workstation database and any application databases opened locally on the workstation.

Affect of Operations on Backup Reminder

The backup reminder that often appears when you close an application database or exit NewViews is independent of logout and overnight backups. It respects the number of days specified in the reminder prompt and checks the last backup or download made using the File>Backup or File>Download commands repectively, and does not check when the last automatic logout or overnight backup occurred. Another difference between these "regular" backups and automatic logout and overnight backups is that multiple regular backups are kept, and existing regular backups are never overwritten.
