Entering and Editing Data

You can edit the information on a document directly (security settings permitting).

To edit a field:

  1. Activate the field (by clicking it or by using the cursor movement keys to position on it) and start typing.

  2. To end the edit, move off the field.

If you activate a field and start typing, any existing data in the field is cleared. However, you can edit a field without clearing it by first pressing the <Esc> key. While you are editing a field, the <Esc> key may be used to restore the field's original contents (e.g. the data it contained before you started editing).

When you are editing a field, you can always restore the field to its original value by pressing the <Esc> key. When you end the edit, the new value of a field is checked and accepted or rejected by NV2.

Alpha/Numeric/Alphanumeric Fields

When entering a character or number in an alphanumeric field, the value will automatically align at the left side of the field. When editing values in these fields, first press the <Esc> then <DELETE> can be used to remove the leftmost digit(s). Several special keys are available when editing alphanumeric fields. Note that cursor movement keys normally move the cursor field by field but when editing a text field they can be used to move the cursor left or right by a character. You can move the cursor to any position in a text field. If you move the cursor past the left or right end of the field, the edit is ended and the cursor is positioned on the next field. When you enter characters, they are inserted at the current cursor position. When characters, numbers or alphanumeric values are entered in alpha or alphanumeric fields, the characters automatically align at the left side of the field.

When entering a new value in a blank field, digits or characters are entered at the right end of a number and the previous digits slide to the left. This is very similar to the way you enter numbers on a calculator. Only characters, digits and sometimes some special symbols such as the minus sign are allowed.

Text Fields

There are no specific conventions for entering data in text fields. Text fields are freeform and can accept any combination of letters, numbers and symbols.

Several special keys are available when editing text fields. Note that cursor movement keys normally move the cursor field by field. The <ESC> key allows editing of a text field character by character. You can move the cursor to any position in a text field. If you move the cursor past the left or right end of the field, the edit is ended and the cursor is positioned on the next field. When you enter characters, they are inserted at the current cursor position.
