Each workstation login row has an autoopen field that can be set to manual or automatic.
When the row is manual you open the books manually by changing the state field to open.
When the row is automatic the books are opened automatically when you open the workstation. NV2 always tries to get you going as quickly as possible. If there are books that you work on routinely, then you may want to set them to automatic.
The automatic opening of books is convenient but there are some points that should be understood:
Passwords may still be collected.
The workstation remembers passwords and this is one reason you can open books automatically. However, the first time you open a set of books for a particular user, or if that user's password has been changed, the password will be collected regardless of whether the row is set to manual or automatic.
Autoopen is reset to manual if the open fails.
When opening a workstation, an attempt to open a set of books automatically may fail. If it fails, the autoopen field is reset to manual and the state remains closed. You will have to change it back to automatic yourself.
Automatic opening of books can fail for a number of reasons. For example, the database file could have been renamed, deleted, or moved to another folder. Or the database file might be on a server that is not running.
Remote sets of books can be opened automatically.
Books can be opened automatically, whether they are local books opened with single-user access, or remote books opened through a server with multi-user access. It doesn't matter.
Typically, a company will keep its server running at all possible times, and employees will automatically open the main set of books for the company when they run a workstation. However, if you only access a set of books periodically, whether local or remote, you may as well open it manually each time.
