Connection Monitor

The connection monitor displays a table of workstation/server connections as shown below:

The upload and download activity of each connection is displayed in real time, and a graph of overall activity is presented in the right-most column above.

When is a Connection Monitor displayed?

The connection monitor is displayed when you open a remote server window. If you don't want a connection monitor to be displayed, you can close it or minimize it yourself. The next time you open a remote server the connection monitor will be displayed again.

What security controls the connection monitor?

The connection monitor "piggy-backs" on remote server security. It is displayed only if you have access to a remote server and remote servers are password-protected.

What are differences between a connection monitor and a remote server window?

A remote server window is more complex as it can display ports, database groups and their offered accounting databases, and connections. You can also use the remote server to add and modify these objects.

The connection monitor displays all connections and nothing else. The connection monitor also displays real-time throughput information that is not displayed by a remote server window. The upload and download action is displayed, as well as an activity graph so that reflects current activity on the corresponding connections. You cannot change the information displayed by the connection manager with the exception that you can delete a connection row to terminate any connection.

Note also that from a workstation you can open any number of remote servers and each will display it's connections. The connection monitor, on the other hand, displays all connections for all remote servers that you have open at any time.

Modifying the Connection Monitor Table

You can modify the appearance of the connection monitor several ways. You can resize the monitor window height, width and position, you can resize and move the columns. However, at this time, you cannot delete or add columns.

Statistics Graph

The Statistics>Display command produces graphs of connection message lengths versus message counts for both upload (workstation to server) and download (server to workstation) activity. The statistics are accumulated for all connections since the last Statistics>Reset command. This lets you reset the statistics before performing a specific operation so that you can view the statistics related to that operation. For example, you could reset the statistics before running a payroll and then displaying the results. The payroll statistics might differ from the statistics for a different operation such as a long Go>Find Column Value operation or just filling in a multi-column blue report table.

This information is largely for the curious, but it can also help QW Page customer support in identifying performance bottlenecks.
