| Account | NV2 | An account is a detailed record of funds received or spent by an organization. This detailed record is in terms of both a category and a portion of the organization that is involved. |
| Account type | NV2 | An account in NV2 is one of several types; AP, AR, BANK, CGS, EMPLOYEE, EXPENSE, GENERAL, INVENTORY or SALES (TOTAL accounts are identified automatically). |
| ACH | NV2 | Automated Clearing House "ACH" is the name of an electronic network for financial transactions in the United States. ACH processes transactions which are originated in batches. Rules and regulations governing the ACH network are established by "NACHA" - The Electronic Payments Association, formerly the National Automated Clearing House Association. |
| ACH credit | NV2 | ACH credit transfers include "direct deposit" payroll and vendor EFT payments. |
| ACH debit | NV2 | ACH debit transfers include "direct payment" used to collect from customers, donors and members electronically. |
| Allocations | NV2 | Allocations are a general purpose mechanism that let you allocate individual transaction detail items for a wide variety of purposes. Allocations are most often used to allocate transactions to different projects, divisions, departments, branches, profit centers, activities, funds, or any other criteria that applies to your organization. | Anchor Date | NV2 | A date in payroll, being the ending date of a pay period. For example, if you have a group of employees that are paid bi-weekly ending Sunday, the anchor date can be any of the 26 Sundays in the year on which the pay period ends. |
| Autoopen | NV2 | The state of how a database should be opened the next time the workstation is run. When autoopen is set to manual, you open the books by changing their state to open. When autoopen is set to automatic, the books are opened automatically when you run the Workstation. |
| Auto-Reconcile | NV2 | A feature that wih a file downloaded from your bank's website will reconcile bank transactions. See Auto-Reconcile for more. |
| CPA | NV2 | The Canadian Payments Association. The CPA operates the Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS) network in the Canada. Refer to the web site at www.cdnpay.ca for current information. |
| Closure | NV2 | Closure is a term from mathematics and computer science. We could "dumb it down" and dream up another name (like union or merge) but it wouldn't help. | Cloud | Computing | Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage (cloud storage) and computing power, without direct active management by the user. The term is generally used to describe data centers available to many users over the Internet. |
| Cloud | NV2 | NewViews can connect across a local area network, or across the planet. NewViews workstations and servers can be anywhere. NewViews can function as a private or self hosted cloud. NewViews doesn't require any special proprietary server hardware or software. Just your plain vanilla computer and operating system will do. |
| Compression | NV2 | NV2 can store imported data from NV1 in a summarized format. A month of NV1 transactions can be stored as a single amount in NV2, and later decompressed to its full resolution. |
| Cross-account | NV1 | The original NV1 terminology for the account that a transaction is posted to. When you add an item representing a transaction to an account ledger, you enter the name of a corresponding cross-account in the [Account] field. Therefore, the [Account] field is simply referred to as the cross-account. |
| Cross-item | NV1 | The original NV1 terminology for the details of a transaction that are added to a cross-account. |
| Cross talk | NV1 | The original NV1 terminology for the action of posting to a cross-account. The process of automatically adding, changing or deleting cross-items is called cross talk. |
| CSV | Software | CSV Format - Comma Separated Values, or Comma Delimited File format. File format Used to exchange data between differently similar applications. The SCV file format is useable by Microsoft Excel and text files. It can be used to import data into NewViews. |
| Database | NV2 | A collection of data arranged for ease and speed of search and retrieval. In NV2 there are 3 separate databases. The workstation database contains a user's private windows and settings. The company's database contains the accounts, journals, transactions and users. The server database contains a table of databases. |
| Distribution | NV2 | The details of a posting to an account. |
| EFT / AFT | NV2 | Electronic Fund Transfer. Automated Funds Transfer. Direct deposit lets your company forward payroll funds intended for employees electronically and directly into their bank accounts in any financial institution in Canada. |

| IP address | Network | Internet address. The server name is its Internet address in a form like "newviews.com" or a raw IP address such as "66.135.99.147". |
| Journal | Accounting | A book of original entry in a double-entry system, listing all transactions and indicating the accounts to which they belong. |
| LAN | Local Area Network | A system that links together electronic office equipment, such as computers and forms a network within an office or building. |
| Login | Server | The process of identifying yourself to a computer, usually by entering one's username and password. The Server Login table shows the date and time a workstation connected to the server. |
| Merge(r) | NV2 | A collection (or closure) of transactions from below. For example, a Total Account displays the merged transactions from all accounts below. Also a collection of employees. |
| MICR | Magnetic Ink Character Recognition | Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, or MICR, is a character recognition technology used primarily by the banking industry to facilitate the processing of checks. NewViews can print MICR encoding on your checks, see Printing MICR Checks for more. |
| Multi-port | NV2 | The NewViews server by default communicates with workstations on port 7890. If running multiple instances of the NewViews server on the same machine, multiple ports need to be configured. See Running Multiple Servers on the same physical computer for more. |
| Multi-user | NV2 | Relating to a product, such as a computer program, that can be used by more than one person at the same time. Multiple users can access the NV2 database with no file, field, page, record, or table locking. If the Sales manager has the Sales Journal Window open, as new orders and invoices are entered they will be displayed in real-time. There is no batching of transactions. There are no conditions is which other users must log-out so a single-user action can take place. |
| NACHA | NV2 | NACHA - The Electronic Payments Association, formerly the National Automated Clearing House Association. NACHA oversees the Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network in the USA. Refer to the web site at www.nacha.org for current information. |

| ODB | Object Database | NV2 is an Object databases versus other technologies such as B-tree, hierarchical, relational, etc. |
| ODBC | Open Database Connectivity | A standard database access method developed in 1992. The goal of ODBC is to make it possible to access any data from any application. |
| OFX | Software | Open Financial Exchange - is a data stream format for exchanging financial information. Many banks in the US and Canada let customers use NewViews to automatically download their bank statements in OFX format. |
| Original entry | Accounting | Traditionally in accounting, transactions are recorded in journals and then at a later time are posted to account ledgers. For this reason journals are often called books of original entry. |
| OS | Operating system | The computers operating system, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Linux, Mac OS X. |
| OS | Server operating system | The servers operating system, Windows 2000 server, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2. |

| Partition | NV2 | Partitions are a general purpose mechanism to classify, organize, and separate different types of transactions and their amounts. You can extend NewViews functionality by adding your own partitions tags; see Partitions and Allocations for more. |
| Paylist | NV2 | A list of the active employees on a payroll with columns for all hourly and salary amounts to be paid on a Payrun. You edit the hours and amounts as required, and then the Payrun is processed to produce the paycheck entries. |
| Payrun | NV2 | A single group of payroll transactions. |
| Peer to peer | Network | A small network with no dedicated server. |
| Persistence | NV2 | A property of a program where created objects and variables continue to exist and retain their values between runs of the program. |
| Ping | Packet Internet Gopher | Ping is the name of a standard network utility packaged with Windows. Ping can be used to determine if a remote computer can be reached on the network and, if so, roughly how fast the current connection is. |
| Port | NV2 Server | The TCP/IP layer protocols used on Ethernet use port numbers to distinguish between (demultiplex) different logical channels on the same network interface on the same computer. The default port used by NewViews is 7890. |
| Posting | Accounting | The transfer of an entry or item from a book or file of original entry to the proper account in a ledger. |
| Protocol | Network | A standard procedure for regulating data transmission between computers. The three most common protocols are, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI. For NV2 to work the computer must be running the TCP/IP protocol. |
| Real-time | NV2 | Relating to computer software that updates information at the same rate it receives information. NV2 displays information as it is entered by users. If the Sales manager has the Sales Journal Window open, as new orders and invoices are entered they will be displayed in real-time. There is no batching of transactions. There are no conditions is which other users must log-out so a single-user action can take place. |
| Right-click | NV2 | Activates the Context menu for further selection. The context menus can be moved anywhere on the screen so you can see all your data, all the time. Pressing the <Esc> key or clicking the mouse anywhere else on the screen quickly dismissed these menus. |
| Router | Hardware | A device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's network; An intelligent TCP/IP redirector. To obtain your router's external IP address click here. |

| smtp | NV2 program | Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (email) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. |
| State | NV2 | The condition of a database (set of books) being closed or open. |
| Switch | Hardware | In networks, a device that communicates and forwards packets between the same LAN segments; An intelligent cable concentrator. |
| Tab | NV2 | A button in the header of a window pane that can be clicked to switch views of the same window pane. The tabs bar makes it easier to switch between views. The tabs bar shows "tabs" for each view that is available for the window pane. The active tab's color matches the table in the window pane. |
| Table | Database | An orderly arrangement of data, especially one in which the data are arranged in columns and rows in an essentially rectangular form. |
| Table explorer | NV2 Database | A split-pane window with the lower or left side pane showing an expanded view (derived) of the selected item in the main pane. This split window table can show accounts in the main pane with the postings of that account in the lower or right pane. |
| Tag | NV2 | The function that allows an NV2 database to be partitioned. All transactions that form the financial activities and reports are Tag [financial.] All budget entries are Tag [budget.] See Partitions and Allocations for more. |
| Tcl/TK | NV2 | The built-in scripting language of NV2. Tcl (Tool Command Language) is used by over half a million developers worldwide and has become a critical component in thousands of corporations. It has a simple and programmable syntax and can be either used as a stand-alone application or embedded in application programs. Best of all, Tcl is open source so it's completely free. |
| TCP/IP | Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol | The Internet's main communication language. |
| Terminal Server | Hardware | Terminal Services, allow a user to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network, using the Remote Desktop Protocol. Terminal Services is Microsoft's implementation of thin-client terminal server computing, where Windows applications, or even the entire desktop of the computer running Terminal Services, are made accessible to a remote client machine. |
| Terminated | NV2 | The audit trail session state setting after a workstation login is deleted from the server. |
| Timecard | NV2 | A NewViews payroll transaction that allows you to allocate your employee wages to various expense/activity accounts on a pay period by pay period basis. A timecard is a record of the time an employee spent performing a particular job at a particular rate of pay. |
| Topology | Network | The arrangement in which the computers of a local area network are connected to each other. |
| Total to | NV2 | The function that connects (joins, link, sum) one account to another. See Totalto Structure for more |
| Transaction | Accounting | An entry in the database/books having at least two parts. The entry must be composed of one or more debit entries and it must be composed of one or more credit entries. Debits and credits are defined as follows; A debit entry increases the balance of an asset account or decreases the balance of a liability or equity account. A credit entry decreases the balance of an asset account or increases the balance of a liability or equity account. |
| Tree | NV2 | A structure for organizing or classifying data in which every item can be traced to a single origin through a unique path. The Tree is the way that Windows Explorer shows the list of folders and files on a drive. |
| Tree explorer | NV2 Database | A split-pane window with the lower or left side pane showing an expanded view (derived) of the selected item in the main pane. This is the full Windows Explorer with the Tree list on the left and the details of folders, etc on the right pane. |
| User | NV2 | A valid access account in a NV2 database. |
| VPN | Hardware or Software | Virtual Private Network, a secure connection between two or more computers located at different locations. |
| WAN | Wide Area Network | Office to office network. |
| WordStar | NV2 | NV2 has a 3rd built-in interface designed for touch typists. The interface uses the standard QWERTY typewriter layout of alphanumeric keys and a Control key. The Control key is a specialized shift key. When depressed simultaneously with an alphabetic key, it causes the keyboard to generate a specific command instruction, rather than the letter. ^Q for Quick cursor functions and ^K for block functions. |
| Workstation | Hardware | A computer running stand-alone or as part of a network that is not a server. Also referred to as a client computer. |
| Workstation | NV2 program | The main NV2 program. You must have this program to use NewViews and to access databases. The computer industry often uses the term "client" where we use "workstation". We use workstation because the term client is overused, especially in an accounting context. A workstation can access any number of servers and open any number of databases simultaneously. The server is specified with each database or left empty to open a local database directly. |
