A NewViews workstation has a login table in which individual rows represent books that can be worked on. Each row contains all the information needed to identify and open a set of books, such as the file name, user, and an optional server name. Every user also has a password for each set of books and typically it would be necessary for these passwords to be entered whenever the books are opened. However, the workstation remembers passwords.
The first time you open a set of books as a particular user, you have to enter the password. The next time you open the books as that user, a password is not required. This can be very convenient, especially when many books are managed from the same workstation.
Because the workstation remembers passwords, it is essential to protect the workstation itself with a password. By setting one password for the workstation, you can access the books listed in the login table without having to enter and re-enter passwords each time you open them.
Note that NewViews never displays passwords. Even in the underlying files, passwords are always encrypted. You should never leave your computer unattended when you have workstations and/or books open. But even if you do, no one can see any of the passwords.
Clearing the password will leave the workstation vulnerable. Anyone will be able to run it without a password and open any books in the login table. We strongly recommend that you always protect the workstation with a password.
To clear a workstation password:
If you have forgotten a workstation password, call Q.W. Page technical support. A support representative will step you through the process of regaining entry to the workstation. This process is designed to ensure that only authorized personnel can obtain access.
Note that no one can ever determine what your password is or ever was (unless you explicitly reveal it to them), even when you regain entry with the help of Q.W. Page customer support. The process to regain entry does not reveal the original or new password to Q.W. Page staff.
There are no restrictions on what you can use for a password. Here are some details and recommendations:
Passwords can be of any length.
We recommend you use at least six characters.
Any characters can be used.
Anything that you can type using the keyboard can be used. However, we recommend you use letters and digits. We also recommend against using spaces and punctuation characters, although they are not prohibited.
Passwords are case-sensitive.
That means an upper case character is considered to be different from a lower case character.
Passwords are never displayed. Even when you are entering a password to gain access, or setting or changing a password, it is not displayed. For that reason, when setting a password you must always enter it twice to verify that you entered it correctly.
