After about 150 hours of operation, my DOS books were successfully converted and I began the process of examining the new system. Other than a sluggish response, the biggest problem I am facing at this stage is that I receive an error message informing me that my database is unregistered, and I am therefore not permitted to make any changes. This is somewhat odd since the “help/about” screen shows that I am registered, and I did go through the registration process with QWPage. If there is something I need to to begin making changes to a db, please let me know. Otherwise I suppose I’ll be calling tech support.
While attempting to figure this out, I began a more careful examination of the other material in the help/about and help/license screens, and I’m beginning to get alarmed at what I am reading. Hopefully I’m just misunderstanding the text, but it seems to say that if a user elects not to renew a support agreement, the database is automatically converted to a read-only state.
Again, I hope that I am misunderstanding the license text, so I won’t comment further until I learn whether that is the case or not.

There is another NV2 installation you can download from our web site which includes an updated NV2 license agreement. Later today, there should service pack 2 on our web site to download (I suspect you running the first NV2 download = Service pack 0). Service pack 1 was available for download last Monday.
Are you clicking on workstation within NewViews 2.0 from the windows start menu? If you had copied the NV2 workstation icon to your desktop, review the icon properties from the workstation desktop icon with the workstation icon within NewViews 2.0 – I thinking they are different.

Hi Martin. I’m stuck at home today with a variety of home repair contractors, so all I can do is read the correspondence. Yes, I was using the “workstation” choice from within the “start” menu, I haven’t gotten as far as creating any new icons, shortcuts, or such.
I’ll be happy to download the newest version, and it looks like I should plan on waiting until the one you mention might be posted today goes up.
Will I need to reregister?
Glad to hear that there’s a new version of the license–I just hope it will be something my employer can ascribe to. (Not suggesting that we won’t abide by whatever we agreed to for the test instance, but if the terms remain as they were, we may not be able to move to NV2 in production.)

You will not have to re-register.

After installing the new update, it tells me that
NewViews is not registered for this computer
So, now what ?
Also, trying to close this window ( using the X ) still opens the Server or Database Window.

I finally had some time to get back the NV2 installation but like the previous poster had difficulties downloading the new file. When I used the same log-in instructions I had received for the first download, your server failed the log on with a message that the user name did not exist.
I attempted to call for support, but I had to leave a voice-mail message as the phone was not being answered by a live person.
Please advise on how to obtain the updated file.

Your username and password hasn’t changed. Ensure you are not using uppercase or that you didn’t make a typing error. The user name and password in your email are still valid.

OK, that worked, but only after I called NV support to re-register. Something happened to unregister my program, but it seems to be fixed now.
The new license agreement is significantly friendlier than the previous rendition.

We are looking at upgrading to NV2, which in our case will entail a number of hardware upgrades. Our questions at this point are:
1. Is NV2 compatible under AMD, and are there any considerations besides sufficient horsepower.
2. Under a 7 user topology, what is the required server to support all users concurrently, using thin clients (dumb terminals—no hard disk).
3. Under our current implementation (NV1), it appears that the data is downloaded to the user workstation, all computing and updating done on the client, and then the resultant data files are updated to the server.
How can we confirm that this is what is happening.4. Under NV2, how do we configure so that the data processing and updating is all done by the server, with the client only providing the application and GUI layers.
5. Is the configuration different for NV1.
6. Has any studies or benchmarking been conducted to determine the user productivity changes between NV1 and NV2.
7. The ‘strongly recommended’ workstation configuration is 1gb RAM, with the minimum being 512 mb. What are the determining factors that necessitate 1 gb—is # of accounts, # of companies, types of transactions, # of G/L accounts….
8. Can we use Norton Ghost to create a master workstation, create a back-up and then restore to each of the other workstations so that every workstation has one complete and common image.

We are running NV2 on Pentium 4 computers that run at 2.80GHz with 1 GB of RAM which is a contemporary system for today. The AMD system you are thinking of purchasing should be comparable but I would ask your computer supplier if the system is comparable. We do not have any AMD systems here. Yes, computer speed/memory is required to run NV2.
Each workstation and server must be a Pentium 4 (or comparable/faster) with the specs. above and have hard disks of their own. Each workstation will have NV2 installed and must be able to connect to the server offering the NV2 books through TCP/IP (which is common on all systems today). A hard disk is required on each workstation to maintain a workstation database and run Excel for printing.
NV1 was not multiuser and the approach in your third question does work. You are either copying the NV1 books from each machine to your server (through windows explorer) or have a batch program written for you that does the copying of the NV1 books to the server for you. You need to verify this on your end.
In NV2, the NV2 server listens to requests made of it by each workstation connected to it via TCP/IP and updates the application databases (NV2 books). Each NV2 workstation has its own workstation database which is located in C:/NV2/WORKSTATION (if you had installed NV2 in C:/NV2) which maintains that workstations NV2 windowing system and workstation logon tables.
Each workstation can work in single user or multiuser or both at the same time. NV1 was single user only. Like NV1, which required that you point nv.exe to a network drive where the books existed, NV2 also requires that you type the server IP or computer name offering the application databases (NV2 books). In NV1, the books database (DATAD.NV) stored all the information pertaining to that database. In NV2, the same is true but in single user, there are two databases that must be backed up (workstation database, and application database). In multiuser, there are three (workstation database, application database, server database).
Productivity in NV2 is similar ro NV1. Take into account that “Default Values” and BLKCOPY/BLKPASTE buffers will need to be set. Some actions may take a few seconds longer in NV2 but others have been found to be faster. The ability to see transactions in total accounts makes NV2 more productive.
Setting up user windows and the length of time running your workstations with several sets of books will push past 512 MB. Also the number of processes running on your windows system before NV2 starts.
You can backup your NV2 databases using whatever method you trust.
I suggest that you read the NewViews 2.0 manual (DO NOT PRINT IT. It’s about 600+ pages) for further information about running a server. a workstation and Appendix B – NV1 users.
