Whoops. I found it. I’d been looking in the data directory, not the application directory.
BMillerParticipantHi Martin,
It’s still having the same problem starting.
If we run this batch file, it starts okay.
cd c:
cd temp
cd qwpage
del /q *.*
cd bin
del /q *.*
cd..
rd /q bin
cd ..
del /q tcl*.tmp
rd /q qwpage
exitI’ve tried deleting only the tcl files, and only the directory, but both of them need to disappear.
Regards
JohnBMillerParticipantThanks Martin,
It’s on an XP Pro machine, and the user is set as an administrator. I did although, right click, and ran as that user. It did start without any issues. Hopefully it works again on Monday.
Regards
JohnBMillerParticipantAlthough you said there were no Windows issues, you did do a restore, so I’m guessing something went awry.
I don’t think the restore process will overwrite your data files.
I would guess that whatever the cause of your windows problem was, may be the same culprit with NV. Have you checked on whether you may have hardware problems? Flaky memory or a failing HD? Power supplies and fans can create heat and power problems.
Good luck,
JohnBMillerParticipantHi Martin,
If I’m being a bit thick with your explanation, please excuse me.
Regarding the backup, I read this in the 2.16 manual.
================================================
Multi-user File Backups and SecurityThe File>Backup command is especially suitable for backing up files opened with multi-user access because there is no need for users to log out first. Users will see a progress window indicating that a backup is being performed, and they are simply paused until the backup is complete.
================================================But, if I run backup on a workstation, it backs up the workstation files, and if I run it on the server, it backs up the server files.
If I want to use NV2 to backup the books, I need to shut down the server, and open them directly on that machine?
And, concerning the Scheduled Task Script, can that be run when the server is up but the books are not being accessed from the workstations?
Regards
JohnBMillerParticipantI’m the “IT” guy for our small business. The 2 people that used to ‘share’ the NV1 computer took the NV2 courses at QW Page. They had a bit of a learning curve, but not an awful lot.
Not much different from NV1. We needed training on that initially, and had a programmer/trainer here for quite some time.
The worst part of the entire exercise was trying to convert the books on our own. Once we found the right help with that (thanks again Bob) it was all pretty easy. He also came in here for a morning or two, and got us up and running.
We’re running 3 workstations and a server, and it doesn’t require much in the way of maintenance. I always dreaded the old “NV crashed” call on my phone.
The users have acclimatized nicely, and other than a couple of minor upgrade problems with versions that may have been released a bit too early, it’s been painless.
In short, a bit of pain for a lot of gain. No more USB printer problems for one.
John
BMillerParticipantThis did end up being problematic. All 3 workstations hung at the same time. There was a dialogue box on the server that was waiting for an answer.
Seems there is a bug in 2.16.1, so I had to downgrade the server to 2.16.0 per tech support.
Question…why is 2.16.1 still available for downloading??
John
BMillerParticipantIn case others are curious, I called tech support and went ahead with this.
After backing up the entire directory, I installed 2.16 overtop of 2.14.
I ran the server and then the workstation to update those, and then opened the books with the workstation. The books were 568 Meg in size, and after being the conversion, which took just under an hour, they are about 250 Meg in size.
I then updated the three workstations, and we’re back up and running in about an hour and a half.
I’ve not had any feedback from the users, and that’s always a good sign!
Painless. (Thanks to the programmers for that.)
John
BMillerParticipantHi Martin,
I did make a note to check back.
If I’ve read this correctly, there should be an update required for July 1st. Is there one coming out today?
Thanks
JohnBMillerParticipantHi Martin,
Are the settings that you suggest for the server?
I’ve had minimal luck with system restore, but it has saved the day a couple of times. It’s not practical to backup systems before ‘minor’ software is installed, and it doesn’t always install properly.
In other words, I’d hate to have to turn this feature off on any of the machines. No other software seems to be affected by this.
Regards
JohnBMillerParticipantInteresting…will run this maximized for a bit, see if that changes anything.
Seem to be a few people with the same problem. I’m a bit surprised that nobody from NV has popped in with suggestions yet.
I found that the power setting for the network card was allowing it to be shut down. I changed that to always on, to match the other power settings for hard drives, etc.
The users said that it “might” be a bit better. Weren’t sure, but overall, still had a considerable wait.
We have found a workaround for the Excel issue. Save any Excel file (even a blank one) on your desktop. When Excel crashes, give it a double click, and if you’re as lucky as we’ve been, you’ll be back in business. It shows up in the taskbar again, with the open files sitting there waiting.
John
BMillerParticipantAre you by any chance using this from a server? We have the same problem here with 3 workstations. I’ve posted a question in the networking forum.
John
BMillerParticipantHi Martin,
I hit the “X”, and the contents of the window disappeared (went blank), but the menus remained the same. The cursor remains as an hour glass overtop this window. I restarted the server, and the Define Columns Window comes back, and everything works, so I will leave it like that until you have another idea.
Did the above twice, so it wasn’t a fluke.
I captured screenshots, and could post, if that would be helpful.
Thanks
JohnBMillerParticipantHas this been changed recently?
My accountant is not happy that I cannot provide him with Sales & Purchase Journals and the underlying distributions…
Barb Miller
BMillerParticipantHi Martin,
We had tried Ctrl and Scroll. It doesn’t work for us in the help file. It does work in the application though. Also works in IE.
Looking forward to 2.10.
Thanks
