    Hi,

For those who are using the nvPRNq program – an extended licence key is available (for free) by sending an email to

Yeah ! its a real dance to make it work. To the point, I don’t bother trying anymore with new video cards. But you may want to try using the “Shell Feature”
Options -> Screen Size -> 43/50 Line Display

Which will help with some extra readability.

Needless to say, some input from Bob would be nice?

    Henry,
The type does get a little bit small !! But for it to work, it really is a very hardware dependant solution. And actually worked well with all the EGA Monitors – but . . . .

With some of the Matrox Video cards, I’ve had good luck and can see all the 7 columns (132 chars wide) of a report or a notes view. But finding the right card is no longer so simple. I still have an older Matrox G2 Card which supports EGA fonts, from an external load. But this card has only 16mb on board, and my newer card has 128. Needless to say, which one is much more fast !!

It is possible to see the whole screen (such as a report) – providing your video hardware will support it. The command must be run from the dos prompt box.

c:nvnvc /? will show the command line options

if your hardware will support it, then the command line is:
    c:nvnvc c:mybooksdirectory /H:42 /W:132 /EDITRT /COLOR

Most of the video hardware will support 50 lines, but has difficulties with the 132 columns wide. You will have to test – to find what exactly will work with your computer.

    I hope this helps.

    Good Question!?

It has been said, there will be an NV1 Skin – for those who still want the look and feel of NV1 – but I have yet to see it.

I’ll let the folks at QW Page, give the rest of the answer to this !!

    Hi Michael
    Welcome to the forum !

I am surprised that using the same printer, now does not print with WINXP? Of course I presume you can print other documents using this printer?

Yes, nvPRNq would solve the problem. And you may want to consider using it, if you want to use a Non DOS Printer, Network Printer, Infrared, USB Ports – etc OR want enhanced features – such as spooling for large or many documents. For DOS capable printers, nvPRNq is not required.

However having NO output problems is usually a question of the configuration. Either from NewViews or Windows. Inside NewViews – any / all print drivers will output something. The NewViews driver’s simply make the style, layout – text look more presentable and or activate special features of the printer. .
A simple test – using any text file AND from a DOS Window enter the command

    PRINT C:MyTestFile.txt

And IF your windows configuration is correct – it will print the file.
Then the NewViews configuration is not correct and you need to target the output to the Printer Port. In the /PO (print options) “File Name” should be one of the following

    Blank – no text
    PRN
    PRN:
    LPT1
    LPT1:
The colon depends on your windows. In some cases (but rare) it could be LPT2.

    Hope this helps

    Guys !?
Any news about the next Beta or UpDate or Release?

    HI Phil ,

I am glad you will test / use the nvPRNq . It does have a few exotic “bugs” which is why its called “Beta Testing”. BUT they are at the Windows Printer API end. A finished product will be ready soon (few weeks). Personally I think its exciting there is now a way to print Letterhead, logos, color, different fonts – all from the NewViews templates. ( Hmm, maybe I need a more diversified life ? )

Changing backgrounds and more specialized parsing is something I’ve been doing for over 10 years. I got tired of all the complexities to manually produce new business forms (moving a few Y/N boxes could take several hours) and so I wrote Autoline – and a new ParseX ( => ParseQ). It took significant time to write them and the supporting tools necessary – but the time required to produce a new form dropped 99%

And I’ve also produced several other significant tools that can extend the life and use of NV1. But for whatever reasons, QW Page is not overtly eager to promote any NV1 functionality. Personally I think they are missing a large PR and Marketing opportunity (but that’s only me).

Thanks for noticing – The story of the “Emperor’s Clothes” comes to mind – I have tough knuckles, and its not the first time (and not likely the last). I have been very vocal in the past – and will continue to do so in the future. BUT politically – one catches more with Honey than Vinegar.

    What more could be said?
I think you sum it up, quite well – but it is something that every CC has told them countless times.

Perhaps you know or don’t – NV1 also took a long time too. NV2 has not always been the same “development product”. IT had several restarts – from scratch, and (I belive) 2 almost completed versions that were abandoned because they just were not good enough.

Phil – and many others at QW Page, would likely agree that I am one of their noisiest critics. So trust me on this one – the timing has not gone unnoticed.

I hate to see anybody leave NV1 – and its also one of the reasons I – and others have been quietly working away in the background producing add-on products to extend and enhance the NV1 package.

In alpha testing – there is a method to export all the contents of an NV1 books into a MS Access Database. Then all the possible features of windows can be included. Perhaps it’s redundant, certainly such products have a limited life – NV2 will include all the same features – and none of them are easy to do.

Like you, we hope the NV2 will be released soon.

    Ah – a question for me !!

Certainly information – banking or otherwise can be imported / exported to and from NewViews. I regularly create custom procedures to do many various things for clients.

While both are possible – I would choose “download a file” over “scan a document” for several reasons.

Downloading your banking information would be much cleaner than “scanning the paper statement” I’ve yet to see a scanner work with documents and not need “extra editing”. Have you tried to “scan” one of your bank statements? Do you get lots of @@@ ?

In the past – I’ve created a “download” account – and the distributions – are each batch. Posting is done directly to the account – then you only have to “cut & paste” items to the bank (or finial destination) – the main question is, create new accounts – when they don’t exist ?

Regardless of what method chosen – Download, Scanning, extract from Excel –
The normal solution is a front end exe (executable) program, to fetch, filter, create a suitable import file for NewViews – and then the NewView’s procs necessary to import the and process the file.

Hope this help to answer your questions.

Yes, I would agree, using a custom template – would fit the enduser better

But, Ah – the questions / answers are only about the Year End.

    Ok, Thanks Bob,
I am surprised that over the years, you did not get more complaints (or simply nobody ever parses them?) ?

My work-a-round was to allow the AutoPrz to have an “Exception List” on the notes view and simply excluded the “offending templates”. (Which actually worked out, quite well ! )
Opening the Parsing Routines for changes – (for me) is not something I really want to do. And I can’t image you want to also.

These seem to be the only “offending templates” – but I don’t know if they’re US ? (I really have not worked with payroll for several years)
    ~REV1.TPL
    ~REV2.TPL
    ~T4.TPL
    ~T4L-1.TPL
    ~T4L-2.TPL
    ~T4S.TPL

If possible, a full list of the “bad” templates, would be nice (if you have it?) for all places?

Even without “re-parsing the new way” – the nvPRNq will capture any output and print – providing “something / anything” was previously printed – which included a Serial Number. Then nvPRNq holds this to be the valid number for the entire nvPRNq session. This was done to handle printing “things” that do not come from a template (such as ~DP or ~BP .

    ( LOL )
I’d like to believe you – BUT when I do it, it works correctly every time and I can not create the fault !! Perhaps the age of the CMOS ? Or that I am using an Intel Chip on an ASUS Board ?

    Really !?

Not that I want the problem – but regardless of how I “create the books”, I can not seem to reproduce the error.

I wonder what is different about my set of exe files?

    Henry,

Near as I can tell – if you are using the PRTPAY Proc, then the Amount Variable is 106. First Parse the Template (~PAY1.TPL) and then add this line of code to be the first line of the template.

I STRESS Parse First – many NV Printing Templates are called directly from the Library, and not the Template Proc.

If you are using PRTPAY then please insert this line to first in the template
@if<= 106,"0" @then @mov 8="0 0" @eop @ret @end If you are using PRTCHKS then please insert this line to first in the template
@if<= 91,"0" @then @mov 8="0 0" @eop @ret @end This will prevent the Print template from actually printing when the AMOUNT is ZERO or Less
The Variable number for AMOUNT changes from Procedure to procedure, but not within a “group of templates” – so the line of code could be used for any PRTPAY Template.

But you should TEST – TEST – TEST

    Regards
    David
