The problem with external drives is that a lot of organizations do not want to have all their financial data simply hanging outside a machine on a portable drive. This is especially true for commercial entities. With all the fine work done on auditing and security in NV2 it seems counterproductive to recommend a huge security breach for confidential data.
For NV2 to be widely accepted QW will have to provide a better solution and a better explanation of hardware requirements for both client and server. Without the source code everyone is left to their own peace meal way of trying to solve this problem. In my humble opinion this has all the signs of threading problems and not USB vs. SATA vs. SCSI. vs. ATM.
One NV2 consultant I spoke with, who was very helpful, said they have solved the problem but he would not disclose how because they spent so much time and money finding the solution. He recommended buying one of his servers for approx. $7000 US. Unfortunately my client does not want to buy a machine except from a local source where they can receive prompt service. Another consultant said to run NV2 Server on a completely separate workstation and not use Windows Server software but rather Windows 2000. What does QW suggest?
A few days ago I called QW support because NVEXPORT was hanging and I was told to set the properties of the NV1 shortcut to full screen, set the idle sensitivity to lowest, and place some object on the
key during the export. This was a great solution since it cut my export time by 1/3 and removed the hanging problem. This needs to be included in the documentation for NVEXPORT so that others don’t have to waste so much time finding it for themselves and reduce the calls to QW support. Sharing solutions is in everyones interest. The more NV2 is adopted the more NV2 consultants will have opportunities to gain new clients and of course the more QW will make through sales. I would imagine that many consultants are quite gun shy about recommending NV2 to new multi-user clients until they have solved the performance problems.
JLeottaParticipantIs there a way to remove these columns for non taxable entities?
JLeottaParticipantPress F11 while and go to the tax column and change the title. Currently NV2 seems to be querying the database for the title which is strange.
JLeottaParticipantHas anyone tried the USB Hard Drive yet?
JLeottaParticipantHello Martin,
I tried what you suggested and still have a problem with pick root for a user. I go in as administrator and set the pick root for Expenses in the Purchase Invoice Journal and when I then go in as a user with access to Purchase Journals and Expense Accounts I get the full account listing. The user does not have rights to the full account listing.
JLeottaParticipantThanks Martin. What is the estimated release date for 2.09? Will there be another service pack before the release?
JLeottaParticipantCorrection to the above my client has 29,550 accounts.
JLeottaParticipantHello Martin,
The client has 4600 accounts. When entering accounts in a journal it is quite slow to keep bringing up all these accounts. There is no pattern to the postings so using a different pick root doesnt help. When the Comptroller was entering journal transactions she stated that turning off the pick list was a must.
JLeottaParticipantHello Martin,
I am using .10 also dont know why you cannot reproduce problems. As for the f11 issue shouldnt the user with limited access be able to set their pick root or at least have an administrator do it. There could be a all user profile stored on the server created by admin.
Thanks,
JimJLeottaParticipantMore problems:
If user has access to bank deposits and sales accounts tries to modify the pick root using the define columns they are given an error and Newviews crashes.
I then went in as administrator and redefined the pick root for column (bank) and then go in as user with access to bank deposits the column labeled “bank” is no longer labled “bank” but is now “name”. If i go in as admin again all is fine.
Seems that there needs to be a rollback on the state of the system when access violations occur and better handling of exceptions.
JLeottaParticipantIn addition, for Sales Report or Sales Accounts I want to remove quantity from the report and just have the amounts. The reason for this is that my client is a not for profit so their sales are Revenue derived from grants or government agencies and there are no quantities.
JLeottaParticipantI agree the indexes should be created at the time of import.
JLeottaParticipantThanks that worked.
JLeottaParticipantHello Henry,
Yes, I wrote it myself because clients needed distribution of hours worked by title and non of the payroll services distributed hours only dollars. Client is a not for profit.
NY State Department of Mental Health requires some incredible reporting that I was able to generate using procedures in NV1. The state has issued its own software but the data for hours by state title is still needed. The client switched to ADP that now does this kind of distribution. They have hundreds of employees and manual input would be too much of a burden.
I would think it would be easy to modify NVEXPORT to deal with specific transactions by turning most of it off. There would have to be modifications to the import routine which I imagine would be more difficult.
JLeottaParticipantMartin there is an SDK with documentation and an example of linking from external programs to the spreadsheet at:
Also since OpenOffice uses the LGPL licensing I would bet you would be able to do a whole lot more with the UI for building templates while maintaining full compatability with Excel.
